Glossary
A nice little studio I like to work at. It's the primary place I record at, but not the only one.
Big Fish
A nice bigger studio I like to work at. Chances are you own a record or two that was recorded there.
Demo and Unreleased
These are recordings which, as far as I know, were never released on a label. Most of these recordings became free demos, mp3s, or just for the artists' personal use.
Engineer
Short for "Audio Engineer". This term is a wee bit outdated. Back in the early days of recording, the people who designed and built the gear, recorded all the music. These nerdy electrical engineers were helping make records because they were the only people who could drive the equipment.
2nd Engineer
This means I work as an engineer but didn't make any creative decisions. In these situations there is a engineer/producer with whom I work with.
Mastering
These days, this usually just means making the recording as loud as possible. Here is a better explanation:
The stage between mixing and the pressing plant, where cuts are assembled in the final order and the master is prepared for duplication: song-to-song levels are equalized, the stereo image is properly balanced, fade-ins and -outs and any crossfades are added, any last-minute compression/limiting is added to even out the dynamic range of the compilation as a whole, if necessary, additional effects such as some reverb to smooth any abrupt transitions, and clean-up of all remaining noise: hum, pops, clicks, crackles, etc.
Mixing
After all the tracks are recorded to tape or hard disk, they must be mixed down to a stereo track. This process includes level setting, adding effects, panning, compression, etc.
Producer
Gets paid more than a engineer. Usually has some sort of speaking accent. Likes to throw 57s at interns. Wears sunglasses inside.

- Tyler Beach demo is almost done. Shawn from Yellow Card came down and did background vocals and helped with arrangement. Nice dude.
- Did some mastering for rapper D Shells. Loves it loud and low.
- Mixing the trip-hop group Birthstone's record. Sound's like Quincy Jones meets DJ Shadow. Not the usuallu heavy shit I get down with but very neat none the less.
